Escocia: Edzell

Edzell castle in Scotland has a surprise - most of the castle is a ruin, but there is a superb walled garden, beautifully kept by Historic Scotland which tries to replicate the "Pleasaunce" begun just after the Union of the English and Scottish crowns (1603). Apparently there were many noble residences with such gardens, but very few have survived.
What makes this so special are the carved stone panels around the inner walls of the castle representing seven Cardinal Virtues, the seven Liberal Arts, and the seven Planetary Deities - perhaps based on contemporary German prints. There are connections to freemasonry in the numbers and symbols, apparently.
The gardens outside the formal ones are peaceful - great place to sit and stare at the trees, birds and sky, and hear the wind rustling the beech leaves. Add a snack and a glass of wine, and well, I could spend the whole day there!
